It comes as no surprise that we are complaining about our skin during this second lockdown. Our skin is suffering enough as it is wearing these masks, let alone sitting indoors more frequently, excess blue light exposure and added stresses in our lives.

Now is the best time to start getting into a routine of looking after our skin so we come out of this second lockdown glowing.

Having a quick rinse of water just isn’t going to cut it, nor using a baby wipe I’m afraid. So lets run through the basics –

Cleanse

Cleansing your face washes away all the dirt, grime, make up, sweat and anything else that clogs your pores and dulls your skin. This must be done twice a day – both morning and night, remembering to double cleanse if your wiping away any make-up residue.

Tone

Toners can help to tighten your pores after cleansing and remove any last traces of make up and dirt on the skin. Try to use the toner within 1 minute of cleansing the skin as it balances out the skin’s PH level.  Try to avoid using toners containing alcohol as these can dry out the skin and cause further problems.

Moisturise

To maintain the balance in your skin moisturise twice a day to lock in the moisture and keep your skin from drying out. Try and find a daytime moisturiser that contains an SPF and a night-time moisturiser that will deeply moisturise overnight.

Exfoliate

It is important to exfoliate 2-3 times a week before moisturising as this will help release any dead skin cells and minimise open pores. Remember to use a gentle exfoliator otherwise it can dry out your skin and cause irritation.

SPF

I cannot stress the importance of using SPF every morning before applying any make-up. Everyday I recommend my clients use at least an SPF30 but ideally an SPF50 if possible. Take note you must use this even if sitting indoors at a computer screen all day to reduce the effects of blue light on the skin.

Face Mask

Ideally you would want to be using a face mask once a week that is suitable for the condition of your skin.

Eye Cream

Eye creams can be very effective in protecting the thinner skin and reducing fine lines, wrinkles and those bags we all wish we never had.  This can be applied at the same time as the moisturiser.

Serums

Serums can be used before applying the moisturiser and can target specific skin complaints. They often work deeper in order to diminish any problems faster.
